Treatment at hospitals in India: a guide for patients in Namibia

This page sets out what patients in Namibia need in order to travel to India for treatment at our partner hospitals. We coordinate the whole journey, from the first medical report to follow-up after you return home.

The Indian medical visa

e-Medical Visa

Namibian passport holders can apply for India's e-Medical Visa online, without attending a mission in person to lodge the application. Namibia is entry 112 on the official eligibility list. Applications are made on the official e-Visa portal, and the letter from the Indian hospital is part of the file from the start. The decision is emailed to the address used on the form, so use one you check and can still reach while travelling.

Apply on the official Indian e-Visa portal

Indian mission

  • The High Commission of India in Windhoek serves Namibia.
  • Chancery: 97 Nelson Mandela Avenue, Klein Windhoek, P.O. Box 1209, Windhoek.
  • Reception is on +264 61 226037 and +264 61 228433, and consular questions can be emailed to [email protected].
  • The consular counter keeps two separate windows, and they are not the same one: applications are accepted between 08:30 and 12:00, Monday to Friday, while completed documents are handed back between 15:00 and 16:00. The office itself is open 08:30 to 13:00 and 13:30 to 17:00.
  • Because the online route is open to Namibian passports, most patients will not need to attend at all.
  • One warning the High Commission publishes is worth repeating: some fraudulent websites offer to obtain an Indian visa and collect a fee for it. Apply only through the official portal. We will never ask you to pay a visa fee to anyone else.

Travelling with a family member

Two family members may come with you, each on an e-Medical Attendant Visa tied to your own medical visa. They are applied for on the same portal, and every person needs a separate application, including children. Apply for the attendants at the same time as the patient rather than afterwards. The attendant visa depends on the patient's, so a late application is the part most likely to leave a family travelling apart.

Documents

  • Namibia's application is made entirely on the portal, so the file you assemble is the portal's rather than a mission checklist: the passport bio page, a recent front-facing photograph on a white background, and the Indian hospital's letter on its letterhead giving the date or expected date of admission. Your passport needs six months left on it and two blank pages, and you are asked to show a return or onward ticket and that you can meet the costs.
  • The High Commission in Windhoek publishes no separate medical visa checklist of its own, which is unusual among the countries we work with and means there is no second list to reconcile. We confirm what is in force before you apply and hand it to you, so nobody is assembling a file from guesswork.

Visa rules differ by country and change often. Once a partner hospital accepts your case we arrange the hospital’s invitation letter and check the current rules with you before you apply.

Getting to India

Airports

Namibia's airports company names two international airports, Hosea Kutako and Walvis Bay, alongside the airports at Eros, Ondangwa, Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, Katima Mulilo, Keetmanshoop, Luderitz and Rundu. Hosea Kutako, serving Windhoek, is the one to plan a journey to India around.

Routes to India

  • Namibia has no airline flying to India, and no carrier's own pages set out a Windhoek routing we are willing to print. We checked the obvious candidates rather than assuming: the East African carrier whose network reaches both Africa and Mumbai does not serve Namibia at all, and the one that publishes a Windhoek page makes no claim there about flying the leg without a stop.
  • So a journey from Hosea Kutako will involve at least one change, most often in Southern Africa, East Africa or the Gulf, and the question that matters is which of those connections leaves enough time on the ground for someone who is unwell. That is a judgement about a specific date, not something a page can answer in advance.
  • We look at what is actually bookable with you when the treatment date is set, and we would rather leave this section short than name a routing that has changed by the time you fly.

Before you travel, check your own government’s current travel advice and your airline’s flight status.

Money

Currency

The Namibia dollar, ISO 4217 code NAD, numeric code 516, divided into 100 cents. The register lists a second currency against Namibia as well, the South African rand, code ZAR.
