Treatment at hospitals in India: a guide for patients in Mauritius

This page sets out what patients in Mauritius need in order to travel to India for treatment at our partner hospitals. We coordinate the whole journey, from the first medical report to follow-up after you return home.

The Indian medical visa

e-Medical Visa

Mauritian passport holders can apply for India's e-Medical Visa online. Mauritius is entry 101 on the official eligibility list, worded plainly as "Mauritius". There is no visa fee. The portal's own country-wise fee table, dated 15 April 2026, records nil against Mauritius for the e-Medical Visa and for the attendant visa alike. The table notes that where a fee does apply a bank charge of 3 per cent is added on top; with nothing to charge a percentage of, that does not arise here. Two conditions apply to everyone. The route is for ordinary passports only, not official or diplomatic ones, and not for applicants with a defence, military, security or police background. And the application has to be filed at least four days before the date of arrival, inside a 120-day window — so it cannot be left to the last week, and it cannot be done many months ahead either.

Indian mission

  • Mauritius has a resident Indian mission, which spares patients the common difficulty of applying through a mission in a neighbouring country. The High Commission of India in Port Louis is the only Indian post in the country.
  • Plot No. 65-C, Ebene Cybercity. The address is in Ebene rather than in Port Louis itself, although the post carries the capital's name — worth knowing before setting out. Telephone +230 460 6600 or +230 468 7857.
  • We confirm the counter hours and the submission and collection windows with the mission before you go, rather than printing hours here that may have changed.

Travelling with a family member

Two people may accompany you, each on an e-Medical Attendant Visa granted against your own medical visa. For Mauritian applicants these carry no fee either, which the portal's fee table records in the same row as the patient's visa. The portal does not publish which relatives qualify as an attendant for Mauritian applicants, and we do not assume a rule from another country's mission. Who may travel with you is settled with the High Commission as part of arranging the application.

Documents

  • For the online route the patient uploads the scanned bio page of the passport, showing the photograph and the personal details, together with the hospital's letter on its letterhead giving the date or the expected date of admission. A recent front-facing photograph on a white background is uploaded in every case. Each attendant needs only the passport bio page.
  • Two upload details catch people out. Files must be PDF, between 10 KB and 300 KB, so a phone photograph usually has to be reduced. And every document has to be in English, or the application is liable to be rejected.
  • The passport needs six months' validity and two blank pages, and a return or onward ticket and evidence of sufficient funds are asked for.
  • Only the online route can be set out here. Whether Port Louis also runs a paper medical visa, and on what terms, is something we ask the mission rather than assume.

Visa rules differ by country and change often. Once a partner hospital accepts your case we arrange the hospital’s invitation letter and check the current rules with you before you apply.

Getting to India

Airports

Mauritius's international airport, IATA code MRU, is the single departure point for the island.

Routes to India

  • Air Mauritius flies non-stop to three Indian cities on its own aircraft, in both directions: Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.
  • The frequencies differ a great deal, and that matters more than the number of cities when you are choosing a treatment date. Mumbai is the practical route, with up to four flights a week, dropping to three in some periods. Delhi and Chennai are a single rotation each week — Delhi out on Wednesday and back on Thursday, Chennai out on Monday and back on Tuesday. A once-weekly route means a missed flight costs seven days, so the return date needs planning around the outbound.
  • Departures from Mauritius are overnight and arrive in India the following morning, which suits an admission booked for the day of arrival.
  • All three appear in the carrier's own published timetables for the current season and the next. Seasonal timetables change twice a year, so we check the schedule in force with you before booking.

Before you travel, check your own government’s current travel advice and your airline’s flight status.

Money

Currency

The Mauritian rupee, ISO 4217 code MUR, divided into 100 cents and issued by the Bank of Mauritius. The international register prints the name as "Mauritius Rupee".
